“So great moreover is the regard of the law for private property, that it will not authorize the least violation of it; no, not even for the general good of the whole community. “ William Blackstone

The following action plan is a very rough outline of how to start organizing yourself and your community to begin fighting the sustainable movement in your area.  The "phases" represent the different comfort levels of the individuals in your group.  EVERY level is very important - phase 1 is for those that do not like to "put themselves out there" - but this level is desperately needed for the success of the movement.  Level three is for those Type A personalities that love to get out there and stir it up.  Of course, each group will tweak this list - but these are the basic things needed to have a comprehensive plan going forth.

  PHASE 1 INVOLVEMENT

1.      Read the textbooks

2.      Tell your family members

3.      Write letters to the Editor

4.      Peruse the newspaper for events

5.      Watch community calendars

6.      Make a list of all of the HOA and their presidents

7.      Make a list of all reporters for your local papers and the address for the submittle of letters to the
          editor

8.      Sign up for alerts to change/additions in the school curriculum

9.      Find out what schools have what groups

10.   Website management

11.   Social networking management

12.   Gather articles on the newest developments on sustainable development and smart growth

PHASE 2 INVOLVEMENT

1.      Go to city Council Meetings

2.      Reach out to city and county officials

3.      Reach out to other groups in the area that share your views on THIS SUBJECT (it doesn’t have to be
all subjects) so that you will have a bigger base to combat issues when they arise

4.      Build an email base to keep everyone informed and to call on the troops when needed

5.      Know the army – know who is good at disseminating info, who is a good foot soldier and who is go
at messaging and public speaking so you can go them accordingly

6.      Work with youth in the area – talk to those groups like YR’s and CR’s  and liaison with them so the
can help your cause – also homeschooling groups are great to collaborate with

PHASE 3 INVOLVEMENT

1.      Organize a group in your area if THERE IS NOT ALREADY ONE – do NOT have splintering factions, if
there is a group – jump on in and help out where they need you

2.      Begin to organize your PRC

3.      Get up and message to Council and County the concerns of the group

4.      Get the press and message to them constantly – work that relationship

5.      Meet with staff of your city and council, as well as your elected officials

6.      Go to different groups and present the concerns and solutions of Agenda 21

7.      RUN FOR OFFICE

LASTING EFFECTS

1.      PRC (this is effective in the community as well as in local government)

2.      Resolutions

3.      Ordinances

4.      Ballot measures/changes to city or county law

5.      General Plan Amendments
